Coaching Courses

Basketball Queensland (BQ), in partnership with our Associations and Clubs, host a number of coaching accreditation courses and events throughout the year.

BQ currently facilitate the Community, Club & Association accreditation and are working with BA to reinstate further accreditation pathways.

Register for Upcoming Courses with OwnUrGoal (OUG)
1. Find a course in the calendar below
2. Head to OwnUrGoal and select "I'm already a member of the Coaches App" or "Join Basketball Queensland Coaches App" in the Product drop down box.
2. Login with your OwnUrGoal details. Don't have an OwnUrGoal account? Just follow the prompts to verify your email.
3. Once logged in, make sure your details are filled in and select the toggle to book a course.
4. Select the Course you would like to attend (double click on the course to move it to the right hand list)
5. Click Save

Community Coach Course

Level of Coaching: Beginner basketball programs
Accreditation Process: Obtained via the SportAus Learning Portal
Prerequisites: No experience required

This is the first step in your coaching pathway and is designed to help prepare coaches across all sports for what to expect in their role. This is a minimum requirement within Basketball Queensland to coach at any level.

Coaching Clinics

BQ will regularly offer coaching clinics outside of accreditation courses to help our coaches better develop their knowledge.

2021 Coaches Weekend
BQ's Coaches Weekend is back in 2021!

Our weekend-long event provides coaches from across the State the opportunity to come together over three days to learn from coaching and development experts. Coaches can register to attend one or more of our tailored coach sessions to further their development and meet like minded coaches. The weekend also doubles as an opportunity for coaches to receive their Association Coaching Accreditation.

Coach Sessions
We have over 20 coaches presentations during the our Coaches Weekend, focusing on topics to improve coach development such as the BQ Style of Play, Player Management and Defensive Containment & Disruption. Register to attend one or more of the presentations that interest you.

New Year's Coaches Clinic
Each year Basketball Queensland holds a New Year's coaching clinic before the Under 18 State Championships to provide coaches from around the state for further development, focusing on a variety of coaching concepts from early offence to organising defence. 

Information for the 2022 New Year's Coaches Clinic will be released shortly.

Level One - Club Coach Courses

Level of Coaching: Club & School Leagues, Junior Representative 
Accreditation Process: Full day course (5 hours) or 5 Star Individual Modules
Prerequisites: Community Coach Certificate

This is the first basketball specific accreditation in your coaching journey and touches on how to develop individual skills as well as basic team concepts. This is a minimum requirement to be a head coach at junior club/rep level.

Club Coach Courses are run primarily by our local associations and we recommend contacting your relevant Coaching Director if you'd like a course run near you.

Female Only Coaching Course
BQ are offering two Club Coach Accreditation Courses exclusively for women and girls on the Gold Coast and in Cairns, hosted by National silver medal winning Head Coach and current Australian U17 Assistant Coach Jackie Brown (Gold Coast) and former Olympian and WNBL Champion Coach Claudia Brassard (Cairns).

The Club Coach Course is the first basketball specific accreditation in your coaching journey and touches on how to develop individual skills as well as basic team concepts.

Registration is FREE and spaces are limited so don’t wait too long to secure your place!
Coaches must be 13 years or older to register and will need an OwnUrGoal profile.

Level Two Courses

Level of Coaching: Junior Representative, Queensland State League (QSL), State Teams, NBL 1 North
Accreditation Process: Weekend course and an assessment
Prerequisites: Club Coach Accreditation (held for a minimum 12 months)
This is a more in-depth accreditation aimed at experienced coaches and includes presentations on advanced tactics as well as improving some of the on court competencies of a coach. This is a minimum requirement to be a head coach at senior rep level, NBL1 North and QSL, and QLD state teams. 

Association Coach Courses are hosted by BQ and are generally offered once or twice a year based on demand, typically in March & November (can vary).
