Statisticians, let’s start recording
A Basketball Statistician is a game official who is responsible for recording all basketball actions (e.g. rebound, assist, block etc) for both teams during a game, often working in a team of callers, inputters and observers. As a statistician, you help improve the play of the game, supplying each team a copy of the stats between play so coaches can identify scoring patterns, player productivity, leading scorers and rebounders.

To transition from Trainee to Level 1 accreditation, prospective statistician must complete a Statistician’s Course (approx. 2-3 hours) incorporating “Level 1 Statistician” accreditation and learning to use the Basketball Statistics program.
After completing a practical assessment, you are ready to become a Basketball Statistician and will be promoted to a ‘competent inputter’.
As a Level 2 accredited statistician you need to be able to accurately call using the correct calling protocol, demonstrate consistency and accuracy in the use of the stats software, prepare and set up the statistics bench including computer hardware and software and reconcile statistics to the official scoresheet.
To transition from Level 1 to Level 2 accreditation, statistician must have held their Level 1 Accreditation for a minimum of 12 months. They can then commence the introductory caller modules and complete an online theory test. After gaining experience as a caller overseen by a mentor, statisticians can then undergo a practical assessment. Once successfully completed, their status will be promoted to a ‘competent caller’.
To transition from Level 2 to Level 3 accreditation, statisticians must gain significant experiences both as an inputter and caller in a range of environments. It is crucial that statisticians are proficient at troubleshooting and problem solving live during games. Once confident, statistician can undergo a practical assessment and be assessed as an ‘excellent caller’ and ‘competent inputter’.
