Basketball Queensland Encourages Schools to Apply for Term 2 Sporting Schools Funding

Basketball Queensland is encouraging schools across the state to take advantage of the latest Sporting Schools funding opportunity, with Term 2, 2026 applications now open.

Delivered by the Australian Sports Commission, the Sporting Schools program is Australia’s largest school-based sports participation initiative, designed to help students build confidence, stay active, and connect with community sport through free, high-quality programs delivered at school.

The initiative supports primary schools and selected secondary year levels (Years 7 and 8), providing funding to deliver inclusive sporting programs before, during or after school at no cost to students or families. Since launching in 2015, Sporting Schools has funded more than 9,200 schools and delivered over 20 million participation opportunities nationwide.

Through the program, schools can partner with recognised sporting organisations — including Basketball Queensland — to deliver structured basketball programs that develop fundamental skills, teamwork and lifelong engagement in sport.

Key Term 2, 2026 dates
  • Applications open: 8:00am AEDT, Monday 16 February 2026
  • Applications close: 5:00pm AEDT, Friday 6 March 2026

Funding available

Eligible schools can apply for grants ranging from $1,000 to $3,650 (GST exclusive), with higher amounts available for special schools and additional support funding where required.

Funding can be used to support delivery of approved Sporting Schools programs, including coach or teacher-led sessions, equipment, and program delivery costs. Programs must be delivered free to students and provide a minimum of four sessions per participant during the funded term.

Supporting active, inclusive school communities

The Sporting Schools program aims to increase participation in sport among young Australians, particularly those who are less active, while building connections between schools and local sporting clubs.

Basketball Queensland encourages schools to consider basketball as part of their Sporting Schools application to give students the opportunity to develop skills, confidence and a love for the game in a fun and inclusive environment.

Schools must be registered with the Sporting Schools portal and meet eligibility criteria to apply. Applications must be submitted online prior to the closing date.
