TAFE Queensland Expand Basketball Focused TAFE at School Programs in 2025

Based at multiple locations in SEQ, TAFE Queensland have launched a range of basketball specific TAFE at School Programs, equipping senior high school basketball players with the right tools to pursue success in and outside the basketball arena, while providing a clear pathway to employment in the sports industry.

Students in year 10, 11 or 12 attend the program 1-day a week during the school year at a basketball facility while completing a tailored sport coaching or athlete development program, depending on their location, delivered by specialised educators from TAFE Queensland (RTO 0275).

The program is fully contextualised around the sport of basketball and the class regularly transitions between the classroom, court and gym to create an active and engaging learning environment. Upon completion, depending on their qualification, students can earn up to 8QCE credit points, contribute to their ATAR, qualify to work or volunteer in assistant coaching roles at basketball clubs or sports organisations and pathway into higher study.

TAFE Queensland Academy of Sport Manager, Jesse O’Hara said “In a first of its kind in Australia, we have created a fully contextualised industry-based basketball coach education program for students in their final years of high school, providing a quality education experience to support their QCE or ATAR, while learning in a highly engaging and active environment.”

These programs are ideal for players who want to incorporate their passion for basketball and the sports industry into their final years of high school.

The program will be available at these locations in 2025:

  • Brendale (Certificate II & III in Sport Coaching SIS20321/SIS30521)
  • Ipswich (Certificate II Sport Coaching SIS20321 only)
  • Gold Coast (Certificate II & III in Sport Coaching SIS20321/SIS30521)
